The Science

The science of touch, engineered into a wristband.

Zappizo is built on a simple, well-studied idea: touch can talk to the nervous system before the mind even catches up.

Research Foundation

What published research shows

Gentle, rhythmic touch activates a specific class of nerve fibers in the skin, sending signals through the body's natural pathways to brain regions that regulate stress, calm, and how we sense our own internal state. Decades of research into affective touch, interoception, and heart-rate-variability biofeedback inform how Zappizo's vibration patterns are designed.

ScienceDirect, editorial overview

Affective touch and C-tactile afferents

A specific class of low-threshold mechanoreceptors in the skin, known as C-tactile afferents, responds preferentially to slow, gentle touch and produces nervous system changes that can enhance affect and reduce stress.

CT-optimal touch and heart rate

Gentle stroking touch delivered at the optimal velocity for these skin receptors produced a measurable decrease in heart rate, an effect not seen with faster or slower touch.

The anterior insula and interoceptive awareness

The foundational paper establishing the insular cortex's central role in interoception — the brain's sense of the body's internal physiological state — and its involvement in regulating subjective feeling states.

HRV biofeedback and brain connectivity

An eight-week heart-rate-variability biofeedback intervention was shown to influence functional brain connectivity involved in emotion regulation, with afferent vagal signaling reaching forebrain regions including the insula.

HRV biofeedback, stress, and mood

A biofeedback intervention targeting vagal (parasympathetic) tone produced measurable reductions in self-reported stress and depressive symptoms alongside increased HRV.

NoteThese are independent, third-party published studies on touch, interoception, and heart-rate-variability biofeedback generally. They inform Zappizo's approach to vibration pattern design but are not studies of the Zappizo wristband itself.

A Different Direction

Calm, Focus, Sleep, and Recover are designed around research showing touch and vibration can help shift the body toward a parasympathetic, rest-and-recover state. Energy works differently — it's informed by separate research on vibrotactile nerve stimulation and its ability to gently sustain alertness, rather than calm the nervous system.

Brain Stimulation journal, 2024

Vibrotactile vagus nerve stimulation and arousal

Vibrotactile stimulation of the auricular branch of the vagus nerve was shown to increase and help sustain general arousal, including during sustained attention tasks.

Placement

Why placement matters

Touch receptors capable of signaling calm to the nervous system aren't unique to any one part of the body — which means effective stimulation doesn't require a headset. Placing ZAPPIZO on the wrist means the same physiological pathway can be engaged comfortably, discreetly, and consistently — because a device you'll actually keep wearing works better than one you take off after a week.

From Research to Your Wristband

Research-informed stimulation, personalized to you

Stage 01

Engineered Patterns

Each mode's vibration pattern is designed around research on touch, mechanoreceptor signaling, and nervous system regulation.

Stage 02

Your Control

You choose the mode and adjust the intensity and pattern that feels right for you, every session.

Stage 03

Personalized Over Time

ZAPPIZO's AI learns which settings you consistently prefer, so your experience becomes more tailored the more you use it.

What We're Seeing

Early, honest results

We're early. Once we have real user data, we'll present outcomes here as self-reported results with sample size and methodology disclosed — the same transparency approach used by other neurotech wellness brands. Until then, treat anything we say about outcomes as self-reported and early-stage, not clinical-trial-grade evidence.

What ZAPPIZO is — and isn't

ZAPPIZO does not read, sense, or measure brain activity. It does not diagnose or treat any medical condition. ZAPPIZO is a wellness device that lets you control stimulation directly and learns your preferences over time. If you have a diagnosed medical condition, consult a healthcare professional before use.

Zappizo's vibration patterns are informed by published research on touch and the nervous system, but Zappizo has not itself been clinically tested. Individual results may vary.
